The hop harvest starts every year usually at the end of August. It is the highlight of the year for every local when the hops are brought in. The cones are picked by machines and then transported into large drying systems (kilns). If you don't feel too bad about any work, love the bitter hoppy smell and want to help ensure that the next beer is actually brewed, you've come to the right place.
Highlights of this trip:
touch the hops
hops separator
hops fresh from the kiln
harvesting the hops
sacks full of hops
Experience Hop Culture
When harvesting starts every hand is needed. It's the bussiest time of the year, when in a few weeks time the farmers need to bring in all of their hops, pluck and dry it and make it ready for transport.
Work usually starts with sunrise and ends with sunset. But hard work never spoils their good humour. After all that's what they have been working for the whole year!
Help is always welcome and you are invited lend a hand.
You start in the morning (not in the wee hours, though) with a quick tour around the farm. Here most of the actual harvesting happens.
After lunch you are welcome to accompany one of the drivers bringing in the plants from the hop gardens to the farm.
